A RECIPE TO END HUNGER

It is said that there are people among us who provide such immense kindness and empathy toward others and seek the betterment of society that they are considered to be Earth Angels. Dawne Gee comes to mind.

Whether you know her personally, or as a WAVE3 broadcaster, a promoter of community services and initiatives, a host from one of the countless fundraising events she's in high demand for, or any of the above, there is no doubt that if you live in the Kentuckiana area, you will know of Dawne and her compassionate personality.

Art-ARecipeToEndHungerBook.jpg

There is no better example of this than when she could not look the other way or wait for change any longer after an incident in 2011 that prompted her, along with Alane Paulley, to found the non-profit, A RECIPE TO END HUNGER to help address child food insecurity.

Starting out as a cookbook full of favorite recipes from celebrities, chefs and restaurants, A Recipe To End Hunger is aimed at making tummies happy, not only by the consumption of the cooked-up family-friendly recipes from the book, but also by donating 100 per cent of the sales from the publication to support local programs that are working to ensure no child goes hungry. Through cookbook sales, donations, sponsors and fundraising events, A Recipe To End Hunger continues its mission to "help solve childhood suffering one meal at a time."

Our *KITCHEN ANGEL* is here on Earth as the sweetest reminder of the importance of kindness, to look out for others and to help ensure that everyone has enough to eat, any time of the year, every day of the week. With her lace apron and open heart, she looks ready to whip some goodness up and comes with and without a festive holiday hat.

BRIDGEHAVEN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Art-Bridgehaven.Logo.jpg

BRIDGEHAVEN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES in Louisville, KY offers a variety of programs to adults living with mental health issues. Bridgehaven was founded in 1958 after the results from a mental health needs study in Kentucky indicated a lack of programs to help serve those with psychiatric issues who were transitioning from a hospital into community life.

Bridgehaven continues to expand on its mission to serve those with mental health challenges, providing ongoing support and a continuing connection to the community and is one of only three organizations in the country to offer this type of specialized setting outside of a hospital. Members have access to a range of programs, including those that focus on independent living, communication and relationship skills, illness, stress and anxiety management, art and pet therapy and goal setting. Members can also participate in a supported employment program to help them find jobs based on their preferences and abilities.

Founded in 2002 by former Kentucky state legislator Mary Ann Tobin, BROADBENT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY rescues and rehabilitates a wide range of injured and vulnerable animals and birds, caring for them at a vast 4,000-acre dedicated site in Guston, KY, before releasing them back to their original habitat. No animal is too small, too large or too elusive to earn the attention and care of their trained and licensed staff.

Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary heeds rescue calls from rural central Kentucky as well as surrounding regions that include Louisville and Southern Indiana.

*HOUDINI* the Billy Goat is dedicated to Broadbent Wildlife Sanctuary in honor of "Houdini, the I-65 Goat," who for many years appeared alongside Interstate 65 before he was hurt and rescued to retire at their site.

*HOUDINI* appears in our collection, accessorized for the season and in standing form, along with a tiny bell so we can keep track of his whereabouts. Supplies are limited so get a *HOUDINI* before they disappear!

DOGS HELPING HEROES

IMG_2146.jpg

When David Benson came up with the idea of training a dog to help his brother-in-law, a veteran trying to cope with PTSD and other after effects from service, DOGS HELPING HEROES (DHH) was born.

Founded in 2013, DHH provides veterans, first responders and gold star families with certified service and therapy companion dogs. In partnership with animal rescues and shelters in Kentucky and southern Indiana, DHH works with

canines that have graduated from basic manners and behavior programs and extends their training to include abilities to respond to each hero's needs and circumstances, along with providing comfort and companionship. DHH has restored the freedom for over 68 heroes by providing them a canine companion's assistance.

David Benson, otherwise known as "Dave the Dogman," was known for wearing a variety of brimmed hats during the hundreds of dog training sessions and agility demonstrations he performed. *DAVE'S HAT* is a paws-up, gold star tribute to Dave and DHH for their service and dedication to the canine world and to those who served for the safety and security of their communities and country.

There are currently more than 40 area businesses participating in the program designed to help their employees learn to recognize and better serve the ASD population.

GILDA'S CLUB KENTUCKIANA

FINALGildasClubKentuckianaLogo.png

Named in honor of Saturday Night Live original cast member Gilda Radner, who died from ovarian cancer in 1989, GILDA'S CLUB KENTUCKIANA (GCK), a part of the Cancer Support Community, offers free monthly programs for those who are living with cancer. GCK has two locations in Louisville, both providing vital social and emotional support for individuals and families impacted by the disease.

Whether it's a monthly event that might include a clubhouse brunch, embroidery workshop, canning demonstration or mindfulness and meditation class, a side of laughter is always served. Count on entertaining fundraising events, performances and tours of some of the area's most interesting landmarks.

Our *BUNNY BUNNY* is dedicated to Gilda's Club Kentuckiana and is a tribute to Gilda, for sharing her humor and herself with the world, even through her cancer fight, and because it was how she greeted the first day of each new month.

*BUNNY BUNNY* is two bunnies, each displaying a little heart. They come joined at the hip - maybe doing a bunny dance

 - or separately as buddies because no one should go through living with cancer alone.

Art-HSOC.Logo.jpg

THE HUMANE SOCIETY OF OLDHAM COUNTY

The HUMANE SOCIETY OF OLDHAM COUNTY (HSOC) is a non-profit, volunteer-based animal shelter and rescue serving the rural community outside of Louisville. It was the area's first no-kill rescue, established more than 35 years ago to provide care for stray, unwanted and unclaimed animals.

Through their many programs, the HSOC has changed the outcome for thousands of animals while also offering support and resources to residents and pet owners in Oldham and surrounding rural counties, including a pet food bank for those unable to afford such costs. With their affordable spay/neuter clinics, barn and community cat programs and dedicated rescue and care for so many adoptable pets, the HSOC has helped to reduce and prevent over-population of stray and unwanted cats and dogs in the area.

Samson, a Lab/Hound/German Shepherd mix, was rescued as a stray by the HSOC in 2018 and enrolled in their KSR Camp K-9 training program. Samson continued with extensive training, sponsored by the HSOC's 4 Paws 4 Service, and went on to become the best friend and service dog for Shane Roof, a local teenager who was suddenly left partially paralyzed from Acute Flaccid Myelitis. Shane documented his adoption story of how Samson changed his life in a video he entered in a contest, winning a grant of $50,000 for the HSOC. Karl, (formerly "Bubba") is a stray tabby cat rescued by the HSOC as a kitten and cared for by one of their foster volunteers. With his spunky antics and loving personality, Karl went on to fill the hearts and warm the spirits of his adopted family at a time when they needed it most. Both are cases of "Who rescued who?"

*SAMSON* & *KARL* are dedicated to the HSOC for their continued commitment to the betterment of the lives of the many animals and pet owners they strive to serve. *SAMSON* and *KARL* appear as ornaments and decorations, alone and together, as well as with other pieces from our collection. *SAMSON* also pays a special tribute as *DAVE'S BEST FRIEND* in memory of his trainer "Dave the Dogman" Benson.
